Everyday life in People’s Republic of Poland

Thursday is a state (Polish Army Day, anniversary of the Miracle at Vistula River battle against the Bolsheviks in Warsaw in 1920) and religious (Assumption of Holy Mary) holiday, so expect most museums and shops to be closed and the city – to be on the empty side (long weeked!). We recommend to head to the National Gallery of Art. Two exhibitions are only on display until Sunday: “The Rise and Fall of Air” by Polish sculptor Katarzyna Krakowiak and “Naked” – a retrospective of works done by Danish artist Peter Land. What we’d especially recommend is the “unofficial photo retrospective” of everyday life in communist Poland, a joint exhibition of six Polish photographers whose work was published in official media of the time. Expect to see photos that are sometimes funny and at other times disturbing, providing a unique insight into the times that seem more and more distant. The gallery building is undergoing major renovation, so follow the arrows to the entrance!

Polish avant-pop at its best – Kobiety at WUJek festival

Kobiety (Women) were probably the first Polish avant-pop group ever. Their 2001 eponymous debut album is now a modern classic, the two subsequent albums confirmed secured the band’s leading position on Polish indie scene. In 2011, the group released “Mutanty”, probably their most radio-friendly production to date. The Warsaw concert on Thursday is an absolute must-hear – esp. since the concert is free of charge!
