#PICNIC

It all started with Poland!

25 years ago, the first partially free elections were organized in a country behind the Iron Curtain (perhaps you know the famous election poster with Gary Cooper marching, ballot in hand, SOLIDARITY logo in the background? Elections were held on Sunday, so people went to vote after church, hence the “High Noon” reference).

That country was Poland, so a quarter of a century earlier it’s no wonder why President Obama, Chancellor Merkel and delegations from 38 other countries are in Warsaw to celebrate! And you should, too! Head (on foot, Krakowskie Przedmieście will be closed to traffic) to the square at the corner of Karowa and Krakowskie Przedmieście to see the photo exhibition “25 times Warsaw” depicting the city since the transformation. And then stay for a picnic! You’ll have a chance to see, among others, symbols of the transformation as rendered by young Polish designers.

#TOAST

Drink a toast to Polish freedom!

Head to the most communist square of them all to raise a glass of bourgeois champagne for regained Polish freedom! At 6pm, expect crowds at pl.Konstytucji awaiting free drinks and snacks to celebrate 25 years of democracy. As the alcohol is free, they might run out – in that case we suggest heading 300 m south to Bastylia crepes shop for a glass of real French champagne (See map and details links below).

#DRINKING

Not a fan of champagne?

If beer is more to your liking, raise a glass for freedom at any of Warsaw’s numerous multitap bars – we recommend “Cuda na Kiju” in the former communist party headquarters (now that will be a statement!) at the corner of Nowy Świat and al. Jerozolimskie. If you can’t find squeeze through to their bar, check out Spiskowcy Rozkoszy at ul.Żurawia 47, Kapsle i Kufle at ul. Nowogrodzka 25 or Piw Paw at ul. Żurawia 32 (all three within 3 minutes’ walk of each other!) All these bars boast an impressive range of Polish craft brews – although you’ll notice Indian Pale Ale and American Pale Ale are the most popular Polish craft beer kinds these days. Na zdrowie!
