#MUSEUM

Delve into history through art

Recently reorganised, the National Museum of Warsaw exhibits an array of works of art dating from the times of ancient Egypt up until the 21st century. You can also admire Polish classics like Matejko (don’t miss his immense ‘Battle of Grunwald’!), Malczewski or Wyspiański. But what truly fascinates us there is the section of European medieval religious art (one of the biggest in the world). This part of the exposition was recently re-opened after massive renovation. We still remember how impressive it was for us when we were kids-2.5 meters tall wooden crucifixes, with all the details of the suffering Christ presented right in our faces… long corridors with silent, mysterious yet beautiful Madonnas and dozens of angels starring at us all the way.. both amazing and frightening. Whoever said museums are boring?
Apart from that you can visit a temporary exposition presenting the works of one of the most important Polish painters of the 19th century – Aleksander Gierymski. He is famous for his very accurate portraits depicting everyday life in Poland, particularly in Warsaw. The crown jewel of this exhibition is a painting which has recently came back to the museum after had been stolen during the World War II – „Jewish women selling oranges”

#FOOD

Polish slow-food for decent prices

In this weather, strolling through Powiśle district is the thing to do – and when you get hungry, climb up the stairs at ul. Solec 44 to stop for (late – the place opens at 4pm) lunch or dinner. Aside from a sizable collection of locally brewed beers, this place is famous for its food, with seasonal menu changing monthly. True, it boasts no milk bar prices, but also the food is far above the milk bar quality – and there’s something for everyone, including vegans and gluten-free eaters! Pick up your copy of the menu and a pencil from your table and order at the bar. Remember to come hungry!
