#SIGHTSEEING

All Saints’ Day & All Souls’ Day

Poles celebrate the All Saints’ Day in unusually solemn way. Throughout 1st and 2nd (All Souls’ Day) of November Polish families will make pilgrimages to the resting places of their relatives, tending the graves with a care that is truly touching, before laying wreaths, flowers and candles that will be kept lit throughout the length of the holiday. As night descends, the country’s graveyards are aglow with the warm light of literally thousands of flickering candles, creating an eerie, incredibly evocative atmosphere that should not be missed by anyone with a heart that still beats.

To the tourists we definitely reccommend visiting on this day Powązki, the oldest (founded in 1792) and most famous cemetery in Warsaw, which is situated in the western part of the city. It contains a mausoleum with memorials to many of the greats in Polish history including many interred since 1925 along the Avenue of the Meritorious. It has also a very large military section for the graves of those who fought and died for their country in the past 200 years including the large number of those involved in the ill-fated Warsaw Uprising against the Nazis during World War II, the Battle of Warsaw and the September Campaign.
