63 days that changed Warsaw

The 1944 Warsaw Uprising, whose 70th anniversary we are celebrating this year, was one of the biggest acts of resistance against the Nazis in Europe during WWII, leading to almost complete annihilation of the city. This interactive Museum tells the story of tragic events of August and Spetember of 1944 in an innovative way, taking you on an enthralling journey through the history of Warsovians’ struggle for independence. It’s also one of the very few museums in Warsaw open on Mondays.
Be sure to watch the short 3D film „City of Ruin” once you’ve seen the exhibition! You can easily plan to spend half your day here, too.

Some of the city’s best multi-tap bars

The past few years have seen a new drinking trend emerge in Warsaw – i.e. bars offering a choice of artesan beer on tap. We’ve recommended Cuda na Kiju in the past, this time we encourage you to check out any of these three: Piw Paw („Beer Peacock”) boasts the biggest selection with over 60 (Polish and not) beers on tap and countless more in bottles. If you’re overwhelmed with the choice, ask for a tasting glass (1zł) or a beer tasting board (6 beers in 100 ml glasses). Kapsle Kufle are basically around the corner and are a bit more upscale in decor, offering a more pleasant drinking experience. The bartenders are very knowledgeable, so don’t be shy and ask them for recommendations! Finally, Chmielarnia (Hops House) is a bit off the beaten path, but very much worth a visit as they offer beers from one of our favorite Polish breweries Artezan (check out wheat Aphrodite and darker Hermes!)AND a really decent selection of Nepali and Thai dishes… just in case you do get hungry. The bar is hidden in the basement of the Warsaw Fishing Association. Happy drinking!
Where: Piw Paw, ul. Żurawia 32/34, entrance from Parkingowa, Kapsle Kufle, ul. Nowogrodzka 25, Chmielarnia, ul. Twarda 42

How much: beers around 10 PLN

World’s best chocolate, at least according to Varsovians!

Cold or soaked aftter walking around Warsaw? You deserve a treat, especially if you’re after a day of sight-seeing! Ask any local and you’ll learn that the best chocolate is made by the Wedel company right here in Warsaw, Poland. The company was founded back in the first half of 19th century and is famous for many other products including Ptasie Mleczko chocolate-covered marshmallows, Mieszanka Wedlowska candy mix and Delicje Szampańskie cookies (you can stock up on them in the flagship store at ul.Szpitalna 8, right next to the cafe).
To have a real hot chocolate drink (and not just cocoa or liquidy pudding), head for the imperial-style cafe in the chocolate factory’s former location located smack in the city center. 12 PLN gets you a cup of chocolatey bliss. If you can’t decide which one you have, dish out the extra 4zł to get a tasting menu of three different kind of drinking chocolate! Take a window seat to people-watch. Smacznego/bon appetit!
Where: any Pijalnia Czekolady E.Wedel (E.Wedel chocolate drinkery), original one at Szpitalna 8 esp. recommended!
Map: click to open
When: 8am-10pm on weekdays, 10am-10 pm on Saturdays
How much: 12PLN and up
