It’s Fat Thursday, have a donut!

This is the last Thursday before Lent, tradition requires that you stuff yourself senseless with sweets, preferably donuts (pączki) or faworki, so don’t be surprised if you see huge lines in front of most pastry shops. Everyone has their favorites, we’ll give you ours, too! If pastry shop at Górczewska 15 is too far and Blikle cafe donuts are too expensive for you, head for Cukiernia Pawłowicz on Chmielna 13 and get a warm oozing yumminess, preferably with two fillings (our favorites include chocolate&cherrry and rose jam&almond). Smacznego!

Meet talented Polish photographer Kuba Dąbrowski

We’ve been fans of Dąbrowski’s weekly column on photography in one of Polish weeklies – however, he himself is a great photographer himself. Head for Zachęta National Gallery of Art to see his solo exhibit entitled „A Drama Feature Film of Polish Production”. Curators want you to treat the exhibit, showcasing 20 years of Dąbrowski’s work, as if it was a film – everyday life of a young Pole sets the backdrop for changes that are subtly hinted at. Recommended!

#DRINK

Mulled beer, anyone?

Varsovians have many ways of beating the winter cold – we put on layers of clothes, try not to go out if we don’t have to, eat soup (esp. Vietnamese pho), drink Wedel hot chocolate or… drink something stronger. And while the ice-cold vodka is one option, most go for beer to spend more time in the warmth of a bar. And in wintertime, beer is just better when it’s warm, and flavored with spices like cloves and cinammon as well as ginger syrup! The bar at Solec 44 specializes in homemade mulled-beer syrups, but you’ll be able to order this typically Polish winter drink anywhere. Make sure you ask for grzane piwo (gzha-neh pivo)!

Longest birthday party ever!

When was Chopin born? You won’t find an answer to this question even in the museum devoted to him. His mother claimed it was the first day of March, while church registry states it was February 22nd. Because no one will ever know the truth, Warsaw throws its most famous male resident a week-long birthday party – between February 22nd and March 1st you will have the opportunity to attend a number of free Chopin concerts held daily in various locations around the city. This Thurday, a whole range of Polish musicians will be performing the music of this most famous Polish composer.

At 5PM, head to the former department store „Bracia Jabłkowscy” at Bracka 25 to listen to young talents Łukasz Jankowski and Katarzyna Mróz playing the famous mazurkas, among others. And in the evening, head to the Central Agronomics Library not far from where Chopin left Warsaw for good in 1830, to hear some of the composer’s most famous waltzes.
