See a royal summer residence in winter!

Jan III Sobieski was the Polish king who stopped the Ottoman army in the battle of Vienna in 1683 – but when he was not fighting, he made sure his life in Warsaw was comfortable, building a French-Polish palace in Wilanów south of the official royal castle. See the beautiful summer residence of the king and be sure to stroll through the equally impressive gardens! This is one of the few museums open on Mondays. Bus 180 takes you there directly from the city center (Castle Square in the Old Town or Foksal/palm tree).  After dark go to the palace’s garden to visit the Labirynth of Ligt and dive  into a real wonderland heavily inspired by Lewis Carrol’s classic story. Great photos guaranteed!

See the Mighty Angel

Wojciech Smarzowski is a screenwriter and movie director who has been awarded for his daring films, which often criticize Polish mentality and talk about difficult moments in our history we’d rather forget about. His latest movie is based on the fabulous novel entitled “The Mighty Angel” (Pod Mocnym Aniołem), written by one of the most important contemporary Polish writers Jerzy Pilch (the novel translated into English), which deals with the problem of alcohol addiction treatment but not only. According to the producers, the film, which is a strong as spirit, will shake Poland. This week you can see whether this statement is true or not as the film will be screened with English subtitles. Check the details below.

#DRINK

Mulled beer, anyone?

Varsovians have many ways of beating the winter cold – we put on layers of clothes, try not to go out if we don’t have to, eat soup (esp. Vietnamese pho), drink Wedel hot chocolate or… drink something stronger. And while the ice-cold vodka is one option, most go for beer to spend more time in the warmth of a bar. And in wintertime, beer is just better when it’s warm, and flavored with spices like cloves and cinammon as well as ginger syrup! The bar at Solec 44 specializes in homemade mulled-beer syrups, but you’ll be able to order this typically Polish winter drink anywhere. Make sure you ask for grzane piwo (gzha-neh pivo)!

Where: most bars around Warsaw in winter season

How much: 10 PLN and up
