#MUSEUM

All the pretty neons!

Neons are an expensive version of the billboard – some of the oldest ones have been around for decades. Sadly, they are beginning to disappear from Warsaw’s cityscape. The people behind the Neon Museum have managed to salvage historical neons from the garbage heap of history and created a unique collection (the only other museum of this kind is in Las Vegas). Visit the post-industrial Soho Factory building to see some of the most beautiful specimen! And be sure to check out their giftshop, too.
And if you get hungry, head to one of Warsaw’s most expensive restaurants in building 46 (look for the neon WARSZAWA WSCHODNIA, or Eastern Station Warsaw) in time to get lunch of the day (soup, entree and dessert) for a mere 20 złoty!
Where: Muzeum Neonów (Neon Museum), building 55 in Soho Factory, ul.Mińska 25Map: click to open
When: 12-5 PM Wednesday-Saturday, 12-4PM on Sundays
How much: the museum is run by a non-profit organization, so donations instead of admission fees!

#EXHIBITION

Cosmos calling!

You think space, you think… Star Trek? Star Wars? You know that both were born in the 70s, right? A few years after man took one small step/one giant leap on the moon. Ever wondered what the space was like from the perspective of behind the Iron Curtain? Be sure to see Cosmos Calls! in Zachęta which documents the Eastern Bloc artists’ perspective on the matter. All works were created in the 60s. As curator’s notes state, the exhibition presents [Polish] artists’ ambiguous ties, exploited by communist propaganda, with science, technology and industry. Whereas the idea, popular as a leitmotif of 1960s retreats and symposiums, of collaboration between artists and scientists remained confined to paper, industrial design was a field where it had a chance to be fulfilled, if only to a limited degree. Besides designs for industry, the show features artistic/applied works that served as a critique of the technocratic system and contested the role that the communist authorities envisaged for design.

The exhibition closes on Sunday, so be sure to catch it on Thursday, when it’s free to see!

Where: Zachęta National Gallery of Art, pl. Małachowskiego 3
