Rufus Wainwright at Palladium

His songs are obviously drawn from his own experience, but he’s mastered the art of making them emotionally universal. Rufus Wainwright has as true a voice as you can hear and as sweet and acute a sensibility as you can imagine. His musicianship combined with his poetic, intelligent and humane outlook on life make for one of the great performers of our day. I adore his singing, his song-writing, everything about him… The Greatest songwriter on the planet. Rufus might sing with that beautiful voice, and the entire world seems to melt and stop; but it’s his hair, after all, that I’m jealous of.
This is what (respectively) David Byrne, Stephen Fry, Elton John and Michael Stipe of R.E.M. said about tomorrow’s star at Warsaw’s Palladium. Do you need more recommendation?:) Wainwright not only sings but also plays guitar and piano, and composes music for theatre and opera. Don’t miss his Warsaw performance!

See a royal summer residence!

It’s only spring but why wait until July comes to see a fantastic summer residence of a Polish sovereign? Jan III Sobieski was the Polish king who stopped the Ottoman army in the battle of Vienna in 1683 – but when he was not fighting, he made sure his life in Warsaw was comfortable, building a French-Polish palace in Wilanów, South of the official royal castle. See the beautiful summer residence of the king and be sure to stroll through the equally impressive gardens! This is one of the few museums open on Mondays. Bus 180 takes you there directly from the city center (Castle Square in the Old Town or Foksal/palm tree). After the visit don’t forget to go to the palace’s gardens which are free of charge until the end of March. Great photos guaranteed!

Where: Muzeum Pałac w Wilanowie

When: from 9:30 to 4 PM, closed on Tuesdays, the gardens open until dusk

Attention trainspotters!

High-tech museums are becoming increasingly popular in Warsaw. Places like the Warsaw Uprising Museum or the Chopin Museum make an impression on those who like interactive and futuristic ways of presenting the past. But we also have a suggestion for those who prefer old, traditional museums where time seems to have stopped somewhere in the middle of the communist era and which require some effort to be discovered as they are not on the top of the must-see list for tourist who visit Warsaw for a weekend. One of those places is the Rail Transport Museum, which was opened 83 years ago in an old railway station. You have several rooms at your disposal featuring all sorts of collectibles connected with the history of rail transportation in Poland and in other countries plus an outdoor collection presenting everything from steam locomotives to a wagon equipped with mahogany furniture used by the first Polish communist leader. So, if you feel like stepping back in time and get off the beaten tourist track – become a trainspotter for a day!

Meet Mr Wainwright. Or pay a visit to Mr Sobieski. Oh, and how about watching some vintage railway engines? You thought there’s nothing to do in Warsaw on Monday? No way! (photo from: andrzej1.flog.pl)
